In October 2009, a bunch of college kids who lived, studied, played, and ate entirely too much Ramen together dreamed of a theatre company for people "like them" : young, creative, and inspired. They wanted to create something new, something entirely different from the already established theatre organizations in their area - something fresh, edgy, and a little dangerous. They longed for a theatre company that dared to both play the classics and to be original, that involved and supported young people, and that challenged, entertained, and excited the local community.
And so, The Underground Players were born.
Some of us had been acting since we were nine years old. Some of us had only picked it up in the second semester of their sophomore year. Some of us were stitchers, some of us were musicians, and some of us were actors.
We were all creators. And we wanted to create a company that gave young artists like a us a home, a safe space, a jumping-off point. Our very favorite thing in the world is to hear someone with a sparkle in their eye say, "So, I have this crazy idea..." We exist to provide a platform, a focus group, a training ground, for early-career, emerging artists. We are multi-platform, inter-disciplinary, and voracious in our enthusiasm for sharing the artistic experience.
We are idea people. We are magic-makers. We are The Underground.
